Vacation Week

Here are a few of the highlights from Becca's Vacation Week here in Colorado. We spent time at playgrounds, went to the butterfly Pavilion, where we held tarantulas. We ate at Casa Bonitas, and the kids were able to do a recording at focus on the Family. it was a fun filled week.

An Art Adventure

Naomi is redecorating the bathroom in their renovated church. She took some old Bibles and decopauged them on the doors. Then she is tiling the walls with pennies. These are pictures of the work although it is not finished yet. It is something to see.

After Christmas Fun

After Christmas we had some family fun. The library had a lego day and we all made something. Then we went minature golfing and played at the mall. At home the girls played Barbies, Grandma made a Tebow sweater for Friday, and Rocket & Elise helped to make "roll - up" pancakes.

Christmas Celebrations

After our trip to Oregon we stayed in Denver with Matthew for Christmas. We went to his church for Christmas Eve Candlelight service. Then we came home for a puppet show by Roxanne. christmas morning brought many gifts, all the men getting Tebow shirts. Then we joined Sarah for dinner, presents and pictures.

We took a quick trip to Portland where we hosted a small family gathering. My 2 sisters and their families came for lunch, and an afternoon of talking and picture taking.

We were babysitting this weekend and Elise wanted to sew some buttons into a necklace. She really enjoyed the activity, and intently picked out her favorite buttons and sewed them together while Corinna just liked to play in the buttons!
The last is a picture of Gary & I at our Christmas gathering with our Bible Study. I need to get a new outfit as I think that I have worn the same one for the last 4 years or so!

Thanksgiving & Birthday

Thanksgiving & Gary's Birthday always seem to run together. I didn't get too many pictures from Thanksgiving, but here are a few. We made our family tradition, pull apart bread for breakfast and Roxanne helped me set the table.
The next week we met at a restaurant for Gary's Birthday. These are the cards that Rocket & Roxanne made for him. I think everyone had a ggod time but Corinna. She is not happy in this family photo!

Missouri trip

Well, I hadn't blogged for a while, partially because we hadn't been doing much and partially because my lap top was broken. But Gary and his co workers fixed it and now I am back in business.

Protesting?

No it was not a protest. It was a rally at City Hall to help save the Post Office. I chuckle to myself to think that we grew up in the 60's when there was a lot of protesting. And we didn't participate in any of them. So now, we are in our 60's, we start attending them. But it is for a good cause. We need the Post Office and Gary needs a job. It was a very unique experience.

Another September Birthday

We had a second birthday here last week. Corinna turned 2. We had a BBQ, presents, cousins, and cake & ice cream. Corinna loved to open her gifts, and chocolate cake was also a favorite. The tired Momma looks like she enjoyed the cake also.

Roxanne'a Birthday

Roxanne had her 8th Birthday at our house on Saturday. She had Patrick cake (from Sponge Bob). We played a get to know Roxanne game and then everyone played with her favorite gift, a microphone. It was great to celebrate with her.

We ended the summer with a family picnic in Denver.
Rocket caught grasshoppers that were in abundance int he park, the girls played in the water, and Grandpa bought ice cream for the kids. It was a relaxing Labor Day.

Friday Night Fun

Our neighbor called us last night and said we had a bear sighting in our neighborhood. After looking outside we found him in our back yard. He was very content to just sit under our tree. We thought he was going to spend the night there, but he eventually got up and left. He climbed the fence and walked along the top 2 x 4 where our neighbor puts out peanuts for the squirrels. What a balancing act. We didn't take many pictures as we were afraid of what the flash might do. And even though it was hot last night we slept with our sliding glass doors closed.

School Programs

The end of the school year means school plays. Rocket had the lead roll in his production playing John Henry. Here are a few of our favorite scenes, from John Henry's birth, where he didn't fit in the crib, to beating the steam engine. And Rocket's favorite, the falling down after beating the steam engine.
Elise was in the singing production of circus circus. She sang along with all of her classmates in a fun performance.

Almost Finished

I know that I haven't been posting on a regular basis, and now I have 4 posts done. Sorry, it's feast or famine. Mostly I have been working on my baskets. I made 170 of them and finally got them sewn together. Now I just have to figure out a border. I am thinking blue, but have been trying many colors. I will post a picture later when it is finished.

Easter

We thought that with Easter being later this year, we would have a chance at warmer weather. But no, this is Colorado, and we woke up to snow. Not a lot, but enough to make it feel cold. but that doesn't stop us from celebrating. We had the traditional egg hunt, and picture with the eggs making the year. Tim said this was the easiest year to make, just 2 straight lines. Yea.

Rocket turns 9

Rocket had his ninth Birthday this last week. We were able to go up for his party. It was a science experiment party. They made slime or gack, or whatever it is called. The kids had lots of fun. Naomi did a wonderful job on his cake. Rocket said it had to be better than Cake boss, and I think she succeeded.

Summer maybe, or just a trick?

Earlier this week it was very warm, and Elise talked Grandpa into putting up the fountain, she said it felt like summer. Elise helped with the rocks, and Corinna helped with the tools, Soon they were playing in the water. But on Easter Sunday we woke up to snow and the fountain was covered. I guess it is not summer yet, just spring in Colorado. This morning I heard on the TV, that only in Colorado we have a green Christmas, and a white Easter. How true.

Frebruary Trip

For our second annual President's Day trip, Sarah, Elise, Corinna, and Betty went on a trip. This year we ellisted Gary and drove to Missouri to visit cousins. It was an excellent trip, just a little long in the car. We were able to help Becca organize her bedrooms, and unpack a few boxes. Zach even helped Grandpa to fix some shelves. Grandpa also made a tire swing for the kids. We took long walks on the farm, and even found a few mud puddles to play in. Elise thought this was more fun than going to school!

Sorry for the delay in blogging. the past 2 months have just zoomed by. The end of January Elise turned 6. She had her party here with 10 little girls all drinking tea. They made lady bug masks, played games, and even played on the swing as it was a warm day, unusual for January. I think it was a birthday party that she will remember.

Christmas this year was full of kids, presents, food, and even a walk to the playground. We enjoyed every minute of it, and can't wait until next year!

Nativity

Things that we enjoy we repeat and they quickly become "traditions". This is the case with the Live Nativity at the Downtown Harvest Church. Corinna was amazed with all the animals, and Elise couldn't wait to hold Baby Jesus.

Christmas Activities

We've had a busy couple of weeks getting ready for Christmas. First we had a Christmas party with our Bible Study. Yesterday we went to church with Sarah & family. Elise was an angel in the Christmas play. Now of course we think she is an angel all the time, (like all of our Grandchildren) but isn't that a Grandparents privilege?

We had a very different but fun Thanksgiving this year. We joined Matt, Naomi, Rocket & Roxanne for a trip to the Denver aquarium, and then we went to Buca Di Beppa's for dinner. And no we didn't have turkey but enjoyed the food tremendously at the restaurant. So today I am cooking a turkey breast in the crockpot, we have to have some leftovers for a turkey sandwich. Aalthough this wasn't a "traditional" Thanksgiving we are very thankful that we did spend some time with family, and enjoyed every minute of it. Halloween

These are the views form Halloween this year. The sky was a beautiful color backdrop for trick or treaters. Corinna wore herself out walking all around for trick or treat this year. She also loved to answer the door and give out the candy. It was one of hte better years for Halloween, just a little cold, but no snow, unusual for Colorado.

Painting

It all started because I said that we needed new carpet. Then we decided to paint before we got new carpet. So we spent our "weekend" painting. Today we got all the living room, hallway and entrance way done. Tomorrow we will do the trim work and put everything back. I know it looks like Gary is doing most of the painting, but really we both worked hard. He would do the cutting in and I would follow with the roller. We even had offers from Elise & Corinna to help today but we passed on that idea. We painted the two tone tan a solid tan, and the white walls we left white, so it really doesn't look much different, just clean and fresh.

Yesterday was very hot at the beach - almost 90. With no clouds in the sky we knew it would be a great sunset. We were able to sit on the beach in shorts and not be cold and watch the sunset. This was a first for us.

We went to Cannon Beach to walk around today. The hanging baskets were beautiful. I think they only grow this big and luscious in Oregon. Tomorrow it's off to the first of the wedding festivities.

Not to Make You Jealous

We did make it to the beach. We stopped at Mo's for dinner, unloaded the car and then we went for a walk on the beach. We found a couple of sand castles someone had made and pretended they were ours. Don't be too jealous, it is overcast and cloudy here.
Dad spent yesterday putting up an antenna for the new TV we put in. The picture is much better than we used to get. Of course the 32" TV helps.

Ourdoor Fun

I haven't blogged for a while, so this is a catch up for what we have been up to lately. First Elise and I planted flowers for the deck. Elise only lasted for 3 pots of flowers, then abandoned me for the sandbox, but we still had fun.
Corinna is spending the summer learning to read and has already advanced to National Geographic. she seems to get more out of them upside down. that's one smart kid!
Then we went one evening for dinner to see Rocket & Roxanne while they were staying at the Hancock's.
All the kids loved to drive the cars.

We are home from our trip and the weather turned warm. Elise & Corinna came over with their parents of course. Immediately Elise wanted to play in the sandbox. Grandpa obliged and took the top off of the sandbox, and then he grabbed the camera and took pictures. This was Corinna's first time in the sandbox, and surprisingly she didn't eat it, but was happy to be playing with Elise.

Mother's Day

It has been a lont time since Gary was home with his Mom on Mother's Day and God gave us a beautiful weekend. On Saturday we did yard work for Helen, mowing the lawns and general cleaning up. Gary put up the number sign that John had made for the back fence. Then on Sunday after going to church we were able to eat lunch in the back yard. Needles to say, Helen was a very happy Mother that day.

Cape Disapointment

Last weekend we had the most beautiful weather at the beach. We took a day trip to Margaret's beach house, and Cape Disappointment. That is where Lewis & Clark spent the winter after traveling west.
There was no wind that day, amazing afternoon at the coast.

A Visit with Kathy & Dan

Yesterday we went inland to Portland. We visited 4 quilt shops, and I almost got overloaded on quilt shops, but not quite. Then we found Kathy & Dan's home. It is a cute home with lots of character. We went out to dinner. Then we walked around a shopping center, but it was very cold for May, and we didn't stay long. Here is how we kept warm.

For the Birds

We haven't been doing much of anything new and exciting, mostly walking on the beach, so these are the only new photos that I have. The seagull I took from the turnout on the highway, and he just stood there as if I should take the photo. There were a lot of the little sand piper birds on the beach and Gary was trying to see how close he could get, but as he crept closer they kept moving away. they are always alert.

While Margaret was here we went to a little shop in Wheeler. They had a shop hop quilt that we both fell in love with. There is no pattern available so the owner of the shop let us take pictures of the quilt. Our favorite blocks were the crabs and the puffin with shoes on. Now if we can just get it made!

Sisters in the Hoods

Margaret and Bob came down today for a visit and to cook us dinner. We drove up to Canon Beach quilt store of course. Then we drove to Ecola Beach just to the north a bit. It was windy and cold but we wanted to get out for a bit. Margaret saw us both with our hoods up on our sweatshirt and said we were sisters in the hoods. so we tried to look cool but really just look like old women goofing off. Oh well we had fun. And Bob cooked us an excellent dinner. He's available for hire!

Grandma wanted the blackberry bushes cleared out from the back yard. Gary worked hard while Grandma & Betty supervised! to help I moved the wood pile that was under the bushes. I found a big ugly spider in the wood pile. My photo isn't as good as Naomi would take, but the middle of it was about the size of a nickel. I did not move this log.

At the Beach

We finally make it to the beach. Here is proof. We have had good weather off and on. Most days we do get a walk on the beach. On the drive out we stopped at Shoshonne Falls in Twin Falls, Idaho. It was very pretty. More to come, we're in Longview visiting Helen now and then down to the beach.

If Grandma Says So

Last Friday we all went up with the Bennets to go to court for Corinna's final adpotion. At first Elise was afraid to go to court and see the judge. All week Sarah & Tim reassured her that all would be OK. But she kept saying she was still afraid. then the day before the court I happened to stop by and again Elise said she was scared. I too told her much the same as her parents but still not sure that I got through to her. But Friday morning she woke up and seemed happy to go. Sarah was curious as to the change of attitude and asked Elise what changed her mind. She replied
"Grandma told me it would be fine."
Spo whatever Grandma says must be true. Now I have to watch what I say!
But all in all it was a great day. We ended the celebration with lunch at Cheesecake Factory. Welcome Corinna.

I am a little late in posting our 2 trips. Sarah, Elise, Corinna & I went to California, while Gary went to Oregon and the beach. I am not sure who had the better time, but it was a great weekend for both. Gary said the beach was beautiful, and they timed their visit with several nights of perfect sunsets. He had a great time I had lots of play time with kids in California, and we were not too crowded in Becca's apartment. It was hard to pick pictures, but here are a few highlights of our trips.

January Busy

January has flown by and no postings. Part of the problem was the cord to my laptop got bent. I couldn't upload my pictures so I could blog. now everything is fixed. Most of the month was spent working on Sarah's scrapbooks. But we also had some time to play with the Grandkids and go to Chuck E Cheese for Elise's 5th Birthday Party. At the party Rocket kept me in line as I asked the 3 cousins to gather for a picture. He said no there are 4 of us now, and he asked to hold Corinna for the picture. What a sweet boy to include everyone in the picture.

Live Nativity

Tonight we went downtown to the live Nativity, complete with pettyng animals. Elise loved the animals. It started to snow while we were down there. the snow just piled up on the llama and he didn't seem to mind. Love that wool. Elise even got to held baby Jesus. Inside we had cookies and cocoa, and warmed up and Corinna had her bottle. It was a good evening to reflect back on what the first Christmas was like.

A Christmas Quilt

This year I finished Winter Wonderland, and was able to get it to the quilter in time so that it could be quilted in time for Christmas. I mostly enjoyed doing the embroidery, but I am most happy that it is finished.

Elise & Corinna has been at our house helping us get ready for Christmas. First Elise dressed Ruthie, then they tried on hats. Next Elise made some cards. It takes a lot of concentration to write your name. Then the girls played with the gingerbread dolls. Yes they are ready for Christmas!

Grandpa's Birthday

Last Thursday we drove up to Castle Rock to meet family for Gary's birthday. The trip turned out good, despite the snow in the Springs. Everyone had a good time. Tim is hiding his good time behind his menu...

Hanging out at Grandma's

Tim was out of town this weekend, well, really he was in Moab with his Dad & brother. So Sarah, Elise, & Corinna hang out a lot at Grandma & Grandpa's. While there we

Annual Pumpkin Farm Trip

This year we tried something different for our fall outing. We usually go to Loveland and pick pumpkins and play at the statue park, but the drive is 2 hours away. We found a pumpkin playground in Monument half way between Matt & us. They had a big slide, 2 mazes and we got a tractor ride. And of course they each got a pumpkin. After so much fun, the ride home was very quiet!

Elk & Deer

We ended up with a three day weekend, which is unusual for us. In order to cut costs the Post Office now requires Gary to take his holiday instead of banking them for future use. So in spite of the cold weather we decided to take a break and head north. We ended up in Estes Park. As we were leaving I commented that I didn't get any pictures to blog about. Just then we came across this heard of Elk & deer in the middle of town. The big bull just sat there keeping his eye on his heard. He then got up and ambled across the road. Gary then turned to me and said there is your blogging story. Tomorrow we head home, after some shopping.

Our New Grandaughter

She is finally here. Corinne Lynne came home today so that we could all see her. Elise was very excited. All afternoon while playing, she would stop and say "I am so excited my baby sister is coming home today". Elise got to hold her and see for herself that she is more than a doll baby, she is real and here to stay for us to welcome to our family and love. Betty

Christmas Wishes - Gail Pan Finished almost

I am ready for Christmas - just kidding. Gail Pan had a free stitchery pattern each month since January. The last square came in September so it was time to finish the quilt. It is put together but not quilted yet. Not sure how I am going to quilt it but it feels good to be at least this much done.
I had the border fabric for several years and was waiting for just the right project to use it in. When I saw the quilt I knew this was perfect. My border is wider than what Gail suggests, but I had 1/2 yard and decided that the best use of this was to make a border 4 1/2 in wide and use up all the fabric.
The stitcherys were so much fun to make, they went together in about an hour. I would watch each month for the new one to appear on Gail's blog. Now on to finishing other things if I don't find anything else on the internet. Betty

Waiting For Fall & The Great Pumpkin

I finished this quilt late last fall and got it back from the quilter just as I was putting up Christmas decorations. So I folded it up and put it away until I could hang it this fall. All summer I patiently waited wondering if I could put it up a little early. But I was good and waited for the right time. The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. Fall is in the air. Now is the time. I love fall and all the decorations that go with it. Betty

40 Years

Last week we celebrated our 40th anniversary. When you first get married 40 years sound so far away and then in a blink of an eye you made it to 40 years. It hardly seems possible. I look back and think of the 20 years in the Army, 3 children, 7+ grandchildren and thank God for all these blessings. We couldn't have made it without the Lord looking over our lives and marriage.

We celebrated by taking a week and traveling in Ohio. We wanted to go somewhere we had never been to. Most of last weeks blogs tell of all the things we did. When we got home we found a gift basket. The 40th anniversary is the Ruby. Our 3 very creative children and their spouses, put together a red basket. In it were 40 red things. There were red toothbrushes, red duct tape, a red flashlight, red thread, red stickers, red picture frames, red licorice and many other things. We had fun unpacking and finding all the goodies they included. There were also serious gifts in the form of gift cards to Red Lobster, Red Robin, and Ruby Tuesday.

So this is a big Thank You to our kids for thinking of us on this special day.

Chihuly Art

Today we went to the Botanical Gardens where Chihuly had a blown glass exhibit. It was amazing how they incorporated the art into the gardens. I know my pictures don't do it justice but here are a few pictures to give you the idea. Our favorite was the butterfly pavilion. There were many butterflies around the glass. It was so beautiful to see God's beauty and man's beauty side by side. Gary said that it is ironic that we came to Columbus to see a Seattle artist. But it works. Betty

Canan Boat Ride Alpine Horns & German Town

Sorry I couldn't blog last night we didn't have internet in the room, just the lounge. So I'll catch you up on our activities. We actually got to take a Canal Boat ride. The other day when we were near the boats it was raining and we couldn't do a ride. But Friday was a beautiful balmy day, perfect for a ride. The boat man had us close our eyes and no talking for a minute. It is so peaceful. Because the boat is pulled by horse or mule there is no engine sound.

Then we found a Swiss museum and learned about Alpine Horns. they were made in Switzerland so then when the men took the cows up the hills to greener grass, he could communicate with his family. Each horn had it's distinct sound that his family knew who he was talking to. We also learned how they were made. The horn maker carved the whole outside first. Then he split it in half and carved out the inside. He then glued it together and wrapped it with chair canning. Didn't you always wonder?

Today we found a section in Columbus called German Town. there was a beautiful park with many flowers. Around the park they had stones with philosophy saying on them, in English and German. I took several pictures of them but this was our favorite. Sorry it is on it's side, not sure why, but that's the way it turned out. Betty

Canal Boats, Ice Cream. Covered Bridge & Amish

We've covered a lot ot territory these last 2 days. We toured Roscoe Village and learned all about the Ohio Canals used in the early 1800's. then we went to Velvet Ice Cream for a tour and taste. Next we found the World's Longest Covered Bridge. While walking though the bridge, an Amish buggy came riding through. Day 2 - Making Baskets

Today we toured Longaberger Homestead. We got to see where they actually make the baskets. And we were also lucky enough to make a basket for ourselves. As part of our package deal we had a box lunch in a special Longaberger basket that we keep. There were many places to take pictures with baskets of course, including this large apple basket. Not sure if I will get to post tomorrow, we are dong some sightseeing in the area. It is really beautiful here, green and rolling hills. the major drawback is the humidity, but we are adjusting. We Are Here

We have arrived in Newark, Ohio. Tim was the lucky person to get up and take us to the airport at 6 this morning. We flew to Dallas/Ft. Worth where we changed planes. We all boarded and put all our luggage in the overhead bins and the Pilot came on and said we have a fuel leak and had to change planes. It really wasn't too bad and we took off only 1 hour later.

In Ohio we got our rental car a PT cruiser. What a fun car to drive. Now we are in Longaberger country. Even the rooms have baskets in them for us to use. We took a drive out to the headquarters building this evening, which is shaped like a basket!
Tomorrow we get to tour Longaberger and make our baskets.
It is hot and humid here, but we did have a little afternoon rain and a rainbow. More to follow another day. Betty

All in One Night

We are watching Elise for the evening and in that short time we played in the fountain, played on the swing, helped Grandma make fruit punch for dinner, made cards for cousins, rode the bike, went to the park, took a picture of Grandma & Grandpa, saw a bunny and a rainbow, then came home and watched a movie. All from 5 to 8:30. I think Grandma & Grandpa were glad to sit and finally watch the movie!

Our Vacation is Over

Our last night here at the beach we spent eating at the burrito place, then took one last walk on the beach. It is bitter sweet as it was the best weather that we had on the beach. It was a fast 3 weeks, but all good things must come to an end. We are going to go to 2 quilt stores on the way home and hope to arrive home Sunday evening. See you soon. Betty

There are lots of activities going on at the beach, we rode the carrousel, played at the beach, , made parade hats. We played games, and Matthew kept score on the computer. Who needs paper and pencils when you have a computer to keep your scores?

New Traditiion

At Easter we use eggs to spell out the year, so we know when we take the picture. So we decided to write the year in the sand when we take pictures at the beach to remember what year we dd what. This is the first of many to come. We went to Hug Point this morning and although it was cold we did have a good time.

First Night with the Grandkids

Naomi is a very trusting soul. She let Matthew bring her 2 children to spend a week with Grandma & Grandpa in Oregon & Washington. The first night we made Roxanne push Zachary around the lake, we introduced the kids to Budda, let the kids eat with their fingers, and let Rocket roam the park at night to find goodies. I don't think she needs to worry do you?

Will it all fit?

We are trying to get ready for a 3 week trip to Oregon. We have decorating stuff for Grandma's Birthday celebration, toys for the beach, crafts for the week, plenty of sleeping bags, and maybe a few clothes. It is all spread out on the living room floor, and I keep wondering if it will all fit in the car. And then I remember that Naomi is going to Chech Republic for a missions trip and she is only taking one back pack to last 2 1/2 weeks. This back pack also has to contain some of the crafts that they are doing for the camp. It is all perspective, but we may have too much stuff. I also

California Fun

Here are some of the highlights of our trip to California. We met Zachary, played tea party, went to a Noah's Ark animal exhibit, went swimming, met Wonder Woman,and saw Alex graduate. It was a fast and fun filled 2 weeks.

Babysitting 101

Well, Grandma didn't get fired as long as Grandpa is along to keep kids from getting into too much trouble. So this is the basic plan for babysitting. Take them to the park to wear them out. Then McDonald's for dinner, and another round of play. After baths, a video is perfect and then to bed. Could it be any easier? Not sure, but it was fun!

Whose Watching Brooke?

One morning Grandma took Brooke & Emma for a walk to the store. When we got home it was too nice to go inside so she watched the kids in the courtyard. Of course Brooke found the only water puddle and enjoyed herself. I think Grandma might get fired!

Not Too Much Fun

Last weekend we were in Denver with Sarah & Tim at the adoption training. Matt was watching Elise, so he and the kids joined us for dinner and a swim at the motel. Becca was sad when she realized that her whole family would be at the motel together, so she told us not to have too much fun.

Easter In Colorado

For all of you who live in sunnier places, or are even visiting warmer places, (like Texas, California, and Washington) this is what you missed this year. We had about 6" of snow this morning. It has stopped now, but is a very wet snow. We still wanted to take our annual picture with eggs so I tiptoed out and placed some plastic eggs in the snow. This is an Easter we will not forget.

One Year Later

One year ago I started this blog, and I talked about my 60th surprise party. What a memory that was. This year was more low key, we went out to dinner with family. It was such a relaxed evening. The kids were very well behaved, even though we sat at the restaurant for a couple of hours. As you can see by the pictures, Rocket kept himself occupied with a couple of straws. Then we started taking pictures of each other. Each grandchild wanted to take pictures of the other two. Thank goodness for digital cameras, and surprisingly many of them turned out. Rocket, Roxanne, Naomi and Matt made the flower that Elise is holding.
Now I know that this is my birthday blog, and that must mean that I am a year older, but that is not what I am thinking about, I am just remembering a fun evening.

We're ready for summer!

I know that I haven't blogged lately, no reason, maybe bored with blogging, or something. Anyway Sarah and Elise joined us for lunch yesterday. It was 70 degrees outside, so we decided to eat on the deck. Elise wanted to play in the fountain, but we said it really wasn't summer and we couldn't set it up. But she did settle for some sandbox play and the swing.
But we know that winter is still here and it's not really summer as snow is scheduled for the end of the week. Ugh!!

Christmas is over and everyone has left. the house is picked up and extremly quiet. what we have left sre lots of pictures and many memories. A Christmas Start

Becca arrived on Saturday night and the fun began. Matt & kids came on Sunday followed by Sarah & Family on Sunday night. So the fun has begun. For dessert we had Ice Cream Pops, can you tell they liked them?

We trained the boys to go get Grandpa's morning paper, they didn't seem to notice the cold.
And of course for church we had our pictures taken with Ruthie Two. More photos will follow as I have a few minutes to blog.

Entertaining Kids in the Car

Last week we took a trip to visit Matt's family and to watch the Trans Siberian Music Lights at the Northfield Mall. On the way home Rocket & Roxanne were getting very bored. I kept them occupied by taking their pictures . This is something we couldn't have done with a regular camera, but with a digital camera we can take as many pictures as we want and if they don't turn out, just delete them.
It really kept them occupied for quite a while, as they would come up with a pose, I would snap the picture and then they would look at the picture and laugh. So if you are stuck in a car with active children, play with your camera.

Waiting For Cousins

Trick or Treat

This is the year that we all got into the Halloween Spirit. We went to Naomi's parents house where Trick-Or-Treating is a big time event. There was a steady stream of kids all night. Here we are with Roxanne, Rocket & Elise, or better know as Bat Woman, Bat Man, and shadow the cat.
On the way home we went by a house that had 16 carved pumpkins. Our favorite was ET. This is something the owner has done for the past 22 years, and he does not usually repeat designs from previous years. What a talent.

Pumpkin Farm

OK by far Naomi has the best pictures, but I do have a few good ones. It is really hard to get 3 kids to sit still for a few seconds to get a good picture, but we constantly try. We couldn't have planned a more perfect day, neither cold nor hot, but just right. And I think everyone found their perfect pumpkin.

New Toys

No these toys are not for the grandkids, but for Grandma and Grandpa. We are calling them His, Hers, and Ours. Gary has wanted a storage shed for a long time and finally this was designated as his summer project. We labored most of the day on Labor Day putting the shed up. Now we just have to clean out the garage and fill the shed.
I have also been dreaming of a large ironing board. I know ironing can't really be considered a play time activity, but when ironing large pieces of fabrics, or quilts these ironing boards are great item. Gary made the board and I made a covering. I'm almost in heaven!
Now I am really in heaven. This is the "Our" toy. Our old TV was almost 20 years old and would turn off on a whim. Usually it came back on in a few minutes, but lately it has been staying off for a couple of hours. Luckily they were on sale this week, so we made the big splurge and bought a big screen TV. We'll see if this one lasts 20 years.

Oklahoma finish

Now I am ready for fall with The Great Pumpkin. I had started this before my travels and finished it while in Oklahoma. It is machine buttonhole applique.
This is what I made in Oklahoma when we wern't lounging at the pool. The first was a panel that is called Wee Play and I merged in with large half square triangles. It was so easy and fast to make as the squares are very large.

Grandpa's Been Busy

Ok, it was really Grandma's idea, but Grandpa did all of the work. Elise and Sarah helped to fill it with sand, and then Elise gave it a test play. Now she just has to choose whether to play in the fountain or the sandbox.

TheGood Life Part 2

OK OK OK, we are getting spoiled. But just so that you don't think it's all so great, there are a few drawbacks. It is very hot. We left 96 degree weather in Colorado and came to a 106 record setting day. The sidewalk is so hot we cannot walk to the pool from our lounge chairs. We have to wear our flip flops to the pool edge and quickly jump in so not to burn the bottom of our feet. Well it's about time for dinner, and it's steak night so I had better get going. Life is so hard!!

The good & the not so good

I honestly can't say that this was my most favorite camping trip. I came home very tired and had a negative attitude, but now 24 hours later I do have a better attitude. I'll list the things I did not enjoy and then get on to the good.
The not so good:
1. The drive up the mountain. I hate steep rough roads, and that is exactly what we had to drive on to get to our camping place.
2. We were really roughing it without even pit toilets.
3. Naomi & Matt took a tumble on the ATV.
4. There were bugs everywhere.
5. It rained partly on Saturday.
The good:
1. We kept the tradition of making up names for each of us and put them on our cups. Mine was "Nervous Nellie" Dad was "The Old Man"
2. Cousins had plenty of play time with each other.
3. Naomi & Matt weren't hurt in their ATV tumble.
4. We got some exercise taking lots of walk.
5. I took lots of pictures and here are a few of my favorites.

Matt & family and we got their first and had to let Sarah & family know where we were camping. Our resident artist, Naomi, made a sign and Rocket posed for the camera while we were waiting for them.

6. I learned two things on this trip. One is that Naomi fits in a 3 year old's car seat. The other is that LOL means laugh out loud. I had thought it meant lots of luck.

7. We built a really big fire with a tree stump that Naomi & Tim found.
8. Everyone helped with cooking chores.
9. There is always a funny face inside Rocket and sometimes we are lucky enough to catch it on film.

Summer fun

After viewing Naomi's Art show we had a picnic and spent the evening playing with the Grandkids. Grandma had brought kids tattoo stamps and everyone had their favorite.
Don't worry they are not permanent!

We also spent some time at the playground, Rocket tried a new trick, and the girls loved the swing that they shared.

The Fourth -Food , Faces, & Flags

We spent the 4th having a picnic with Sarah, Tim & Elise at Memorial Park. We also stayed for the symphony & fireworks. Grandpa & Elise enjoyed the ice cream that we brought.We didn't plan it, but we ended up wearing red t shirts, so we tried for a group photo. Grandpa started acting up and we all followed, but eventually we did get a good photo.
And of course what is the 4th without flags.

Family Visits

Gary's sister, Gayle and her husband John came for a visit. A first for them. Of course we did all the tourist things like going up Pike's Peak, visiting the Cliff Dwellings, and picnicking. Here we are with Matt & Naomi in Breckenridge. Rocket & Roxanne took advantage of the rocks in the creek. It was a special treat to have family visit.

Gees Bend Quilts

Last week we went to the Denver Art Museum to see the Gees Bend Quilts. I wasn't able to take pictures so I took some from the newspaper article about them. These are quilts that were made from 1940 to 2002 by four generations of African American women who lived in rural Alabama . The quilts were made by hand using whatever they had on hand, and many were made from used clothing. I loved the denim quilts that showed where they had removed the pockets. It was really amazing to see what they did. This quilt was my favorite! It was made in the 70's with left over corduroy. The women had entered a contract with Sears to make pillow shams. They then took the leftover pieces and made quilts from them. Of course the colors popular then were the olive green, gold, brown & red. They hand quilted through all that thick material. I feel so guilty I just send my quilts off to the long arm quilter and presto they are done. These women put me to shame. .

Little Girls & Dolls

Last week must have been Doll Week. Elise came over and she dressed all the Cabbage Patch dolls that we had here, and of course we had to take a picture. Then we went up to Matt's and Roxanne wanted to play dolls. So we dressed all her dolls and again took a picture. Roxanne said that she didn't have many clothes for her Cabbage Patch dolls. I asked her if I should make some for her and she agreed. She said she needed 100 clothes for her dolls. Guess I will be a little busy this summer!

Another Finished Quilt

Are you looking for your socks? This quilt that I made while in Oklahoma is called Lost Socks from the book Sunflower Patch by Black Mountain Quilts. It was fun to make, a real easy pattern, machine buttonhole applique.
I tried a new technique where I put a very thin batting behind the block when I did the stitching. Then I added another thin batting to it when it was quilted. It makes a very heavy quilt. I am not sure I will do this again, although I started my pumpkin quilt in the same way.
My friend Ann who just got a long arm did the quilting for me. She chose a snowflake design for it and I think it turned out great.
Now that I finished one I would like to start another, but I am busy working on 3 right now. I will try and restrain myself. Except I found a great background fabric , tan with barns on it for a fall quilt. Now to find a pattern!
